Associate Professor Organizational Communication and Senior Advisor to the Provost at Southern Methodist University
About
Dr. Maria Dixon is currently the senior advisor to the provost and associate professor of organizational communication, director of communication studies, and adjunct associate professor of homiletics at Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas. As the senior advisor to the provost, Dr. Dixon oversees CIQ@SMU, Southern Methodist University’s signature campus wide initiative addressing diversity and inclusion.
Designing an initiative that will launch SMU into the role of preeminent thought leadership on the use of cultural intelligence in higher education to address issues of human difference, Dr. Dixon’s research on race, identity, and organizational practice is serving as a launching pad for the University’s overall efforts.
After a BS in marketing from the University of Alabama, Dr. Dixon completed a masters of divinity and masters of theology from Emory University, as well as a PhD in organizational communication and religion from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her research and professional consulting is focused on strategic communication for non-profit and religious organizations and the implications of identity, power, and organizational culture on strategic communication.
Current Work:
Maria is currently overseeing the launch of CIQ@SMU, Southern Methodist University's strategic initiative to embrace cultural intelligence as its dominant framework for ensuring effective management and collaboration across all facets of human difference.
