About
Dr. Kendall Deas is a native of Sumter, SC and is a visiting assistant professor of political science at the College of Charleston. Dr. Deas received his PhD in educational administration and policy from The University of Georgia's College of Education. Dr. Deas's area of specialty is education law and policy and he completed a minor cognate in higher education policy with UGA's Institute of Higher Education (IHE). He holds a BSFS degree in international relations and a certificate in Western European studies from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, an MA degree in globalization studies from Dartmouth College, an MA degree in political science from Washington University in St. Louis, and a MSPP degree in public policy from The Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Public Policy. He holds certificates in policy studies from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and The University of Texas at Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs. Dr. Deas was a Fulbright Scholar to Finland where he earned a diploma in international trade law from Turku International University's School of Law. He was a one-year Visiting Student at Mansfield College of Oxford University where he studied politics, philosophy, and economics (PPE). For 2015-2016, Dr. Deas was named an Emerging Diversity Scholar by the University of Michigan Ann Arbor's National Center For Institutional Diversity (NCID) and for 2016-2017 was named a New Leadership Academy (NLA) Fellow for higher education leadership, also by Michigan's National Center For Institutional Diversity.
Dr. Deas's professional experiences span the public, private, and non-profit sectors working as a senior research analyst in urban and regional planning with Huntley Partners, Inc. in Atlanta GA, a project associate in regional economic development with Partnership Gwinnett in association with the Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce in Duluth, GA, and a research assistant for The Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress.
Current Work:
Dr. Kendall Deas is the principal investigator (PI) for a National Science Foundation (NSF) proposal entitled Mentoring for Math Proficiency (M4MP), a STEM education initiative in association with the College of Charleston's Department of Teacher Education (TEDU), the Office for Institutional Diversity (OID), the Southern Initiative of the Algebra Project (SIAP), the Charleston County School District (CCSD), and two Title 1 schools in North Charleston, SC: Chicora School of Communications, and Morningside Middle School. He is also conducting research for a book that he is co-authoring that will be the first of its kind devoted to education laws as they relate to the state of South Carolina.
