Dr. Wrenn is a lecturer of sociology with Monmouth University. She received her PhD from Colorado State University, her MS in sociology in 2008, and her BA in political science in 2005, both from Virginia Tech. She served as council member to the American Sociological Association’s Animals & Society section (2013-2016) and is an advisory board member with the International Network for Social Studies on Vegetarianism and Veganism with the University of Vienna. Dr. Wrenn served as Director of Gender Studies with Monmouth University and was elected Chair of the Animals and Society section of the American Sociological Association (2018-2021). She contributes to the Human-Animal Studies Images and Cinema blogs for the Animals and Society Institute and has been published in several peer-reviewed academic journals including the Journal of Gender Studies; Disability & Society; the Journal of Agriculture & Environmental Ethics; Food, Culture & Society; and Society & Animals. In July 2013, she founded the Vegan Feminist Network, an academic-activist project engaging intersectional social justice praxis. She is the author of A Rational Approach to Animal Rights: Extensions in Abolitionist Theory (Palgrave Macmillan 2016).
Current Work:
Dr. Wrenn is currently exploring factionalism in social movements, using a case study of the animal rights movement. She is also exploring white-centrism, sexism, and fat-shaming in the animal rights / vegan community as a barrier to social justice goals.
