Charity Watkins, a native of Rochester, New York, is an assistant professor in Social Work at North Carolina Central University. Charity is a Triple Tar Heel with a BA in sociology, a master's degree in social work, and a PhD in social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Charity's research interests include academic resilience among Black children, parenting, and socioeconomic and racial disparities, and racial disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality rates.
Current Work:
After receiving an internal mini-grant from her institution, Charity is working on a qualitative study to examine parental attitudes and behaviors that support the academic resilience of low-income Black children in elementary school. In addition to her dissertation research, Charity is also beginning her study of cardiovascular conditions in Black women following childbirth and their effects on parenting during early childhood.
