Associate Professor of Arts Administration & Director of MA Program at Florida State University
About
Dr. Cuyler joined the Florida State University (FSU) faculty in 2012. He has held faculty positions at Savanah College of Art and Design, American University, and SUNY Purchase College. Although he is “the first Black man to earn a Ph.D. in Arts Administration,” and “earn promotion and tenure in the discipline,” he is less concerned about achieving these superlatives. He cares more about enhancing and increasing the educational attainment of arts managers, especially those who identify as BIPOC.
Current Work:
The central question that he explores in his research is, in what ways can the cultural sector ensure and protect the creative justice of marginalized, oppressed, and subjugated peoples? By pursuing answers to this research question, Dr. Cuyler's scholarship raises questions about access, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) in the cultural sector, as well as arts administration and cultural policy education. His forthcoming book in September of 2020 examines racial diversity in opera. He is also editing a volume that surveys arts management and cultural policy across the African diaspora, as well as a volume that conceptualizes and theorizes creative justice in the U. S. cultural context.
