About
Carmen Monico is an associate professor in the joint master and PhD social work programs of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Monico's transnational research includes transnational migration, human trafficking, global governance, and community-based research in local and international settings. Monico' scholarship includes being a Minority fellow of the Council on Social Work Education (2009-2011), a Rotary Foundation/International Research scholar (2011-2012), a U.S. Fulbright scholar (2016-2017), a RTI University scholar (2021-2022), and serving in various national and international networks and partnerships.
Current Work:
Dr. Monico has been mentoring PhD students in the joint A&T/UNCG doctoral work in several research projects. One on the African American homeless population in Greensboro and an one on immigration detention, both of which involved interviews with service providers and have manuscripts under production. Narrative case analysis through interviews were conducted with therapists working with young adoptees, and a book chapter is being jointly written. An auto ethnography as a phenomenological tool on immigration policy is near completion, to be published as a chapter for a Handbook on Forensic Social Work. A systematic review of best practices in sexual violence prevention and relevant government and university policies is in progress, with results summarized in a manuscript. Dr. Monico was recently selected RTI University scholar for 2021-2022 to engage in survey analysis on the deportation experience of Guatemalans returned from the U.S. administrating survey data collected, and publish on results.
