About
Aurora Santiago Ortiz is a Social Justice Education scholar. Her research focuses on antiracist feminisms, decolonial perspectives, popular education, and participatory action research. She holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a Juris Doctor from the University of Puerto Rico's School of Law, and a B.F.A. in Film and T.V. from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Her work has been published in the Michigan Journal for Community Service Learning, Tracce Urbane: Italian Journal of Urban Studies, and in Chicana/Latina Studies Journal. She has also been a contributor to Society and Space, The Abusable Past blog of the Radical History Review, Electric Marronage and Zora magazine.
Current Work:
Dr. Aurora Santiago Ortiz is an interdisciplinary scholar of community-based, participatory action research, as well as antiracist feminist pedagogies and methodologies. Her intellectual trajectory is guided by two main avenues: 1) The effects of neoliberal policies and austerity measures on public education writ large and 2) the ways marginalized populations contest and create alternative public pedagogical projects. Guided by these interests, her scholarship advances intersectional approaches to addressing social inequities in community-based settings.
As a Lyman T. Johnson Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Kentucky, she is working on a multidisciplinary community-based project titled "Developing an Emergency Sociotechnical Infrastructure with Lexington's Latinx Community." This project brings together multiple stakeholders from civil society organizations, local government, and community members t develop a technological platform that facilitates the rapid dissemination of information in emergencies.
