About
Viviana (Vivi) Hernández joined the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) from the University of Michigan Law School, where she served as an associate director of student services. In that role, she mentored, counseled and assisted approximately 1,000 students on a variety of academic, personal and professional matters, such as: dual degrees; disability accommodations; sexual, personal, academic and professional misconduct; withdrawals; leaves of absence; letters of recommendation; academic performance and goals; course selection; degree requirements; degree audits; character & fitness issues; bar qualifications; and, exam rescheduling. In her daily work, Hernández provided support to and advised faculty, staff, and students on a variety of issues vital to improving the students’ academic experience, professional development, extracurricular pursuits, and overall wellness. Prior to her role at Michigan Law, she served as a Title IX Investigator with the University's Office for Institutional Equity (OIE). In that role, she conducted comprehensive investigations and wrote final reports related to allegations of sexual and gender-based harassment; interpersonal violence; stalking; and sexual assault. She also delivered training programming to faculty, students, and staff on OIE policies, and coordinated with campus partners—including the Office of Student Conflict Resolution, the Dean of Students Office, Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center, and Housing—to assess and resolve concerns. Prior to returning to Ann Arbor to work at OIE, Hernández was an assistant director in the Office of Student Ethics at Indiana University, as well as a child protective services worker in Oregon. She was born and raised in La Villita on the South Side of Chicago, earning her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her law degree from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.
In her role at the NCID, Hernández will manage the development and execution of several key U-M and LSA diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) plan initiatives focused on efforts to recruit, retain, and support the overall success of outstanding scholars whose scholarship, research, teaching, mentoring, engagement and/or service demonstrates a commitment to DEI.
