During the 2022-2023 academic year, NCID’s Anti-Racism Collaborative will partner with the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) at the University of Michigan (U-M) to offer the Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney (DMR)/NCID Postdoctoral Fellowship, a unique postdoctoral fellowship for an early career scholar in African, African American, or African Diaspora studies whose research/scholarship focuses on racism, racial equity, and/or racial justice along with possible connections to work on socioeconomic (in)equity and colorism in the United States, Africa, the Caribbean and around the world. The fellowship is named after W.E.B. Dubois, Nelson Mandela and Walter Rodney — all political and intellectual giants in the struggle for racial equality and political inclusion of Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color in the United States, Africa and around the world.
The DMR/NCID Postdoctoral Fellowship is aimed at promoting and supporting the work of outstanding early career diversity scholars. The DMR fellowship program provides an opportunity for scholars to focus on research and writing while in residence within a broadly interdisciplinary and global Black studies department. The fellow will also participate in the Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC), a strategic space created to facilitate U-M community engagement around research and scholarship focused on racial inequality, racial justice, and anti-racist praxis. The ARC will support a variety of activities to catalyze innovation in research and scholarship, as well as informed practice, public engagement, and action to advance anti-racist principles and organizing. This postdoctoral fellowship will provide early career scholars with opportunities for professional development, scholarly and career mentoring, and interdisciplinary research and teaching, including participation in the activities of the ARC’s community of postdoctoral scholars focused on anti-racism and racial justice.
The initial appointment will be for one year, with the potential for renewal for a second year.
The salary for the postdoctoral fellows is $55,000 per year plus benefits. Fellows will receive additional support for conference travel and other research-related expenses.
Consideration will be given to all disciplines including the humanities, social sciences, and, in some cases, law, business, urban planning, and other professional schools.
Candidates must have a PhD in-hand from an institution other than the University of Michigan and be no more than seven years beyond the completion of their degree. That is, for the 2022-2023 academic year, applicants are required to have earned a PhD no earlier than January 1, 2015 and no later than August 31, 2022.

- Research Proposal that outlines your scholarly work and includes your research plan for the fellowship period; references, citations, formulas, and graphics do not count toward the page limit (2-3 pages).
- Teaching Statement that describes your teaching philosophy, which may incorporate experience from formal or informal teaching and mentoring opportunities (1-3 pages).
- Personal Statement & Diversity Commitment that includes your demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through scholarship/research, and/or teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement. There may be some overlap with your research proposal and teaching statements (1-3 pages).
- Writing Sample - 30 pages maximum, double-spaced
- References - name and contact information for at least three referees who can supply letters of recommendation. Letter writers must submit letters of reference by November 8, 2021.
