On Thursday, May 2, 2019, NCID faculty fellow Dr. Becky Wai-Ling Packard will participate in a discussion on the challenges and benefits of cross-identity (gender, race, etc.) mentoring relationships from a mentor and protégé perspective.

Dr. Adrianne Haggins, an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan, will begin the discussion with a lecture on the challenges with achieving a diverse health care workforce and mentorship hurdles faced by groups underrepresented in medicine.

Dr. Haggins will be joined by two discussants: University of Michigan Professor of Emergency Medicine Dr. William Barsan and Mount Holyoke Professor of Psychology and Education Dr. Becky Wai Ling Packard. Dr. Barsan brings the perspective of a seasoned mentor from his decades of experience as a former chair in the University of Michigan’s Department of Emergency Medicine, and long-standing interest in faculty development. Dr. Packard has expertise in initiatives to improve pathways and academic climate for underrepresented groups in STEM fields.

The lecture and discussion will take place on Thursday, May 2, 2019 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at University Hospital, Sheldon Towsley Auditorium.
