“How astronomer Frank Kameny got fired, got angry, and changed the world”
Frank Kameny fought in WWII, earned his Ph.D. in Astronomy from Harvard, worked as an astronomer for the federal government, until he was fired in 1957 for being gay. That humiliating dismissal spurred Kameny to protest his firing to the U.S. Supreme Court, and subsequently pursue five decades of activism that profoundly changed the landscape of LGBTQ rights in the United States.
