Field of Study: BA in Near Eastern Studies - Arabic, Linguistics
Graduation Year: 2017
My experience with the Near Eastern Studies department started in my first semester of college, when I signed up for introductory Arabic. I liked its intense, interactive learning style, and continued studying Arabic for the next four years. I also enjoyed NES history courses and participated in activities hosted by the Arabic Language Club to improve my speaking skills. As a junior, I translated and presented Old Arabic poetry at the NES annual poetry night.
Last summer, I had the fortunate opportunity to study Arabic in Jordan for two months as a FLAS fellow. The advice of my mentors and teachers in the NES was vital in helping me acquire funding from the International Institute. Studying abroad was incredibly beneficial and has allowed me to take graduate-level courses in Arabic grammar and fiction as a senior.
As a pre-medical student, majoring in Arabic Linguistics through NES provided me with mentorship, balance, and opportunities to pursue my interests. Beyond the classroom, I taught for the Princeton Review, worked on clinical research in the Department of Psychiatry, and helped run the Arabic Language Club, among other activities. After graduation, I will study medicine at the Ohio State University.
