Mentors

Each student admitted to the MIW program is assigned to at least one mentor while they are in DC.  Mentors are UM alums established in their professions who live and work in DC.  Student/mentor matches are based on academic, professional and extracurricular interests.  Mentors are instrumental in coaching students on life in Washington. Each mentor arrangement is unique in terms of time spent, activities pursued, communication frequency and the balance between personal and professional focus.

MIW program alums volunteer to serve as co-mentors for students in both in Ann Arbor and DC.   In Washington, mentors  and students gather at opening and closing receptions each term to become acquainted, share stories and catch up on recent events.  In Ann Arbor, a reception is scheduled during the Prep Course so that students going to Washington can connect with one who has already been there.  Many students stay in touch with their mentors long after they finish their Washington semester.

If you’re a UM Alum living in DC and are interested in mentoring a student, please email [email protected] for consideration.
