MIW Staff

Amber Blomquist, Administrator

Amber is responsible for the day to day operations of Michigan in Washington, including recruitment, marketing and promotions, and admissions. Please reach out to Amber with any questions about MIW funding, application process, inteviewing, or other general inquiries.

Margaret Howard, PhD., Program Manager

Dr. Howard is located in Washington DC and works on the ground with the current cohort, arranging programming and opportunities for students while they are in DC. She also works with students on their internship searches and networking.

Advisory Board

The MIW Advisory Board serves as a steering committee for fundraising and program activities and events in DC.  Meetings are held each term in Washington, and members who reside elsewhere participate by conference call.

Faculty Advisory Committee

The Faculty Advisory Committee consists of Political Science and other members of the faculty and administration.  This committee provides guidance and advice on MIW curriculum and other program matters.  Members of the committee also participate as needed in the student interview and selection process each term.  The committee meets once a year or as needed.

Mentors

Each student admitted to the MIW program is assigned two mentors while they are in DC.

Mentors are UM alums established in their professions who live and work in DC.  Student/mentor matches are based on academic, professional and extracurricular interests.  Mentors are instrumental in coaching students on life in Washington. Each mentor arrangement is unique in terms of time spent, activities pursued, communication frequency and the balance between personal and professional focus.

In Washington, mentors and students gather at opening and closing receptions each term to become acquainted, share stories and catch up on recent events. Many students stay in touch with their mentors long after they finish their Washington semester.

If you’re a UM Alum living in DC and are interested in mentoring a student, please email MIWDC@umich.edu for consideration.
