Why did you decide to do Michigan in Washington?
I decided to participate in the Michigan in Washington program because it would allow me to continue taking classes, gain in-residence credit, and gain experience in a profession that interests me based on my future career goals. As a first-generation college student, I was looking for a program that would also offer me a variety of resources I needed to succeed during and after. I knew attending this program would heavily provide me with the necessary skills to navigate my career and professional growth. It has been important to me as a junior getting ready to graduate to have an experience like this in a new location where I could gain hands-on experience in a possible field of work once I graduate.
What do you do during a typical day at your internship?
I work both in-person and remotely, so my days vary. On Capitol Hill, I assist with a variety of tasks, including constituent services, while at the Office of the Federal Public Defender in Maryland, I am an investigative intern where we conduct background checks on witnesses, gather records, and help prepare for trials and other court appearances.
What's something that you're proud of that you've done at your internship so far?
I have built wonderful relationships with my colleagues and really feel comfortable asking questions to make sure I do tasks to the best of my ability!
How has your skillset evolved or changed since you began working on this internship?
My skills have improved in a variety of areas, some more technical than others, but the most noticeable improvement has been the way I approach a question. Learning what questions to ask, who to ask, and how to ask them has been helpful. This helped me not only at work but also professionally and educationally.
What is one fun activity that you have done since being in D.C.?
I went on the White House Garden Tour!
What advice would you give to a student interested in Michigan in Washington?
Reach out to students who have participated in the program and ask them any questions you have about the application, their experience in the program, and any other ones you may have. Additionally, contact program directors who can answer any additional questions you may have, as they will be helping you with your transition to D.C.
