Why did you decide to do Michigan in Washington?
I am planning on attending law school in the future and I was looking for real world experience in policy and government to get my foot in the door. The Michigan in Washington program presented a great opportunity for me to do just that, in the best place to do it; The Nation’s Capital!
What do you do during a typical day at your internship?
There’s no such thing as a “typical day”, the only consistent part of my day is watching Oscar grab his 2 o’clock coke. Often, I can be found doing research on potential clients, writing reports to update our current clients, or attending hearings on the Hill. During the “fly-in season” I help guide our clients around the Capitol to meet with different representatives and voice their concerns.
Which elective are you taking and what’s the most interesting part of the class?
I am taking “Lobbying, Money, and Influence in Washington” with Dr. Steven Billet and I’m glad for it! The work I do with MTA is in the lobbying side of the food and agriculture industry, so it’s amazing to go to class every week and learn about it on paper then go in to work the next day and see it in action.
What do you like to do in D.C. during your free time?
You can find me spending my free time mountain biking or hiking in the national parks, exploring the array of museums and historical sights, or hanging out with friends at the different memorials.
What’s something on your D.C. bucket list?
Before I leave D.C., I would like to walk around the Tidal Basin while the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Hopefully by the end of this month!
What advice would you give to a student interested in Michigan in Washington?
MIW is a great opportunity to expand your network! Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone; the more people you know the more opportunities you’ll find. Remember, the people you will meet are more than happy to help you with anything but they can’t help if you don’t ask. Don’t hesitate to take full advantage of this great opportunity, it really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance!
