MLK Spirit Awards
Each year, U-M honors students who best exemplify the leadership and extraordinary vision of Dr. King. Nominees demonstrate inclusive communities building, social justice action, diverse community engagement, systemic injustice(s) confrontation, and racial justice commitment. MCSPers are consistently nominated (and also win) the award.
MCSP recognizes Ashley Tjhung for being one of the recipients of 2019's award! MCSP also recognizes the following award nominees:

Alumni Returns to Ann Arbor
MCSP loves when our alums return to Ann Arbor to visit David and Wendy! Recently, Danielle Schmutz, who served as Coordinator of Community Service for two years during her Masters of Social Work, came back to visit campus and share updates from her work. She currently works at Beacon House, a home-away-from-home for families with loved ones receiving medical treatment at local hospitals. MCSP is incredibly proud of your work, Danielle!
13th Annual Circle of Unity
This past MLK Day, MCSP held its annual Circle of Unity event - 2019 marked the 13th time the event has been held. Together with co-sponsoring organizations, the entire university community were invited to join and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King through music, dance and spoken word. Themes of diversity, unity, peace, and racial equality were a commonality among all pieces performed at the event, headlined by Joe Reilly and Julie Beutel. Even though the frigid, chilly temperatures forced the event indoors, the Circle of Unity drew a large crowd and was a great success. MCSP thanks all the support from co-sponsoring organizations, all the performers involved, and the U-M community for coming out to the event!
MCSP Day of Service
Dr. King advocated for social justice and change in our communities, and one way MCSP helps contribute to societal change is through the many service opportunities our students engage in. From feeding the hungry, to expanding literacy, MCSPers commit themselves to bettering our world through community service. Here are some highlights from the MCSP Day of Service held earlier this month.
Giving Back in Detroit
On MCSP's Day of Service, students volunteereed at a food bank in Detroit. Some MCSP alums in the community joined the students in giving back to their community. This is a great testament to the service commitment our students have during and after their time in MCSP.
Helping People, Helping Communities
Some students volunteered at Therapeutic Riding, Inc. on the MCSP Day of Service. Through cleaning and maintenance work, MCSP students helped this stable provide horse rides to people with disabilities. What a fun way to interact with animals and give back to the community!
