We Can All Change the Story --  A Celebration of Hope; 7pm, Michigan Theater

The goal of the overall campaign is to prevent deaths by suicide by creating a community of caring on our campus using our many roles of friend, roommate, mental health professional, faculty, staff, adviser, parent, loved one, administrator, GSI, residence hall staff, A2 community resources, and so forth.  We need the full orchestra, the jazz band, the fusion band, we need....... all of us to join together with the band.  We need a community that is actively and visibly engaged in stopping student suicide.

We can’t do this work alone. Our campaign aims to co-create our campus culture in which students, faculty and staff are engaged in talking about suicide and reaching out to those who may be in need of support. We want to make it easier to talk about suicide, not just with counselors but with roommates, professors, and our campus community partners.  In a campus of our size, creating and maintaining this culture change remains a challenge and will take time.  But, we can do it.  We can all join together with the band.

Last year, UM students participated in a Messages of Hope project, creating thousands of positive messages and distributing them throughout our campus, which continues today.   This year, we have added engaging our university partners to think creatively about how they can make an impact in their own departments to prevent suicide.

Our April 8th event will bring together students, faculty, staff, and community members (free of charge) to celebrate hope, resiliency, and connectedness—the protective factors that are most effective in preventing deaths by suicide.

Toxic Tour; 10am-2pm, Detroit

Take a toxic tour of Detroit with the environmental activism and the environmental justice classes from the residential college!

Join the RC’s Virginia Murphy, and Charles Stokes, from Detroiter’s Working for Environmental Justice.

Tour sights may include: Detroit Waste Incinerator, Russell Bazaar, (a brownfields redevelopment); Packard Plant, (the largest abandoned building in the us); the former Uniroyal site; Earthworks Urban Farm, and Marathon Oil Refinery, (Michigan’s only oil refinery and resident of the most polluted zipcode in the state).

This event is free, but seats must be reserved in advance.
Round-trip bus transportation from east quad is provided. Bring your own brown bag lunch.

Detroit Partnership Planning Team!

The Planning Team is a group of approximately 70 individuals devoted to coordinating service-learning opportunities for U of M students to cultivate positive relationships with Detroit organizations, break down stereotypes, and advocate for social justice. To learn more about our organization's mission and history, please review our website: http://thedetroitpartnership.org/  Currently, our responsibilities are delegated between 8 teams: Major Events, External Publicity, Campus Education, Finance, Detroit School Volunteer Programs, Brightmoor Volunteer Programs, Eastside Programs and Southwest Volunteer Programs.

Being a member of the Planning Team is a significant time commitment, and we seek applicants who will take this commitment seriously. All members are expected to attend weekly meetings (Wednesdays at 8:30 pm), as well as attend separate sub-team meetings and fulfill weekly tasks.

But the planning team is also a lot of fun! As a PT member, you will have opportunities to visit the city's restaurants and museums, discuss and learn more about Detroit history and current events, and partake in exciting and meaningful service work with Detroit residents! If you are deeply passionate about Detroit, multiculturalism and social justice issues, we sincerely encourage you to apply.
Planning Team applications are attached to this email. Applicants are required to submit an application form before 8:00pm on April 11 and attend a 15 minute interview.
