Spheroidal Coordinate Systems: Overview and Analysis
Friday, October 30, 2020
4:00-5:00 PM
Off Campus Location
Every student of third semester calculus learns the usefulness of spherical coordinates. Spherical Coordinates are but one example of a more general but less familiar class of coordinate systems: Spheroidal Coordinates. In this talk, we'll see how these coordinate systems work. We'll construct an orthogonal basis for functions on prolate spheroids and show that an important result from spherical harmonic analysis generalizes to these surfaces.
