Given a closed oriented surface S, the Teichmueller space T(S) of S parametrizes (with some redundancy) the collection of Riemann surfaces homeomorphic to S. By a construction of Bers, T(S) is a complex manifold. I will discuss an analytic approach to the construction of Teichmueller spaces, and then outline Bers' system of holomorphic coordinate charts on T(S).
