It has been said that the basic object of study in modern number theory is the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers. Although this object remains quite mysterious, its local analogues, the Galois group of the p-adics, are in some (but not all!) sense largely understood. In particular, we know a presentation of these groups, at least for odd p.
I'll discuss some of what is known about the Galois group of a p-adic field. This talk should be accessible to anyone who knows some algebraic number theory. Speaker(s): David Schwein (UM)
