The Boundary Element Method: An Introduction, and an Application to Bioelectrostatics
Friday, January 5, 2018
4:10-5:00 PM
1084 East Hall Map
The boundary element method (BEM) is a computational method for solving linear PDEs with wide applications to scientific problems in electromagnetism and fluid mechanics. This talk will introduce BEMs, in hopes of giving students a new technique to add to their computational toolboxes next to the more familiar finite difference (FDM) and finite element (FEM) methods. We will additionally highlight advantages and disadvantages of BEMs to FDMs and FEMs, and consider techniques to improve the efficiency of BEMs. We will then consider an application of BEMs to the biolectrostatic problem modeled by the Poisson-Boltzmann equation.
