Kevin Piterman and I recently showed that the complex of partial bases of a free group is highly connected. This simplicial complex encodes relations between different bases in the free group. Our proof uses connectivity properties of the boundary of Outer space, a moduli space of graphs used to study automorphisms groups of free groups. I will explain how one can use this space of graphs to deduce properties about the rather algebraic complex of partial bases.
