Program Requirements

Math Ph.D. students will receive course counseling from a member of the Doctoral Committee until they match with their advisor.  The Graduate Program Coordinator will process departmental and Rackham paperwork.

The Ph.D. Program is broken up into three distinct stages, each characterized by its own set of requirements. Details for each stage can be found by clicking the links below.

Stage 1 This stage begins with admission to the Doctoral Program and ends with the completion of the Qualifying Review. Students must complete this part of the program by the beginning of their sixth term, but ideally sooner.
Stage 2 This stage commences with successful completion of the Qualifying Review and finishes with admission to Candidacy. Students must complete this Stage by the beginning of their seventh term.
Stage 3 This stage begins with admission to Candidacy and finishes with a successful Thesis Defense. This is the most difficult part of the Program. No student should expect to complete it in less than twenty-four months.
