Lloyd Scholars in Shelley Manis’s section of LSWA, “The Playwright and the Dramaturg” have been engaging with theatre in various ways during this semester’s virtual course.
They attended the Cleveland Play House's virtual event, "Theatre Thursday," on February 18.
Sweetland Center for Writing and LSWA instructor, Shelly Manis, explained, “I chose this event for a few reasons: (1) It's an opportunity to see professional playwrights at work, (2) It's an interactive event that also happens to be directly aligned with some of the major goals of our course: to think like playwrights and dramaturgs and to produce a new play event of our own, and (3) I think the pandemic at least gives us a real opportunity to experience theatre in geographic locations that would otherwise not really be possible for us IRL. Hoping we'll get to see some Zoom-original theater this semester, too! (And/or maybe we'll make it ourselves!)”
Following the event, Manis confirmed it was “a TOTAL delight!”
Through the remainder of this course, Lloyd Scholars continued to get the opportunity to connect with playwrights and view other timely theatrical pieces, including UMS’s Old Black Man.
To wrap up the semester, Lloyd Scholars held their own virtual play festival on April 26. You may enjoy reading their program that includes notes from the director, playwrights, and dramaturgs.
