U-MONUMENT 2014: TRANSLATING THE FACADE OF ANGELL HALL
Ann Arbor, MI – Imagine this: You’re standing in front of Angell Hall at night. It’s the last day of classes, and you’re wondering what to do before you have to get serious studying for exams the next day. Then, suddenly, lasers light up the eight massive Doric columns framing the front portico of Angell Hall. Wild dance music starts playing, an eight student K-Pop dance troupe appears in sync between the columns, and a live female DJ – elevated twenty feet in the air – entertains hundreds of students and community members dancing under the stars! Add free Sweetwaters Lemon Ginger Tea for the first 500 dancers… Now you are experiencing the first ever U-Monument! That sounds crazy, right? But that’s exactly what's happening on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, from 9-10:30pm in front of Angell Hall (435 S. State Street).
U-Monument 2014 is an interactive community "translation" of the facade of Angell Hall through laser lights, music, and dancing, presented by U-M’s Contexts for Classics (http://www.umich.edu/~cfc/index.html). This free event is open to the public and features a DJ set by Scout, live dancing by K-Motion, and laser art by Mike Gould / Illuminatus. This outdoor, end of semester, “Dance Your Classes Off” party is the culmination of U-Monument 2014 – an event dedicated to the study and celebration of the facade of Angell Hall, one of architect Albert Kahn’s most well-known U-M buildings.
On April 22 at 9pm, the lasers will be fired up, the music will be pumping, and the dance action in front of Angell Hall will sizzle and light up the night!

U-Monument 2014 is supported by over twenty-five institutions and departments across U-M’s campus. The event is produced by Nick Geller, a PhD candidate in Classical Studies, and directed by Mark Tucker, Art Director for the Lloyd Hall Scholars Program. (Tucker is also the founder of FestiFools and FoolMoon, two popular local, annual public art events.)

A free LED-apparel making workshop will also be offered on Sunday, April 13, 1-6pm in the Art Studio at Alice Lloyd Hall (100 S. Observatory). Make a piece of wearable LED sculpture to wear to this one-of-a-kind dance party!
