Retirement fund, gifts of stock, and other assets

Retirement Fund Assets

Make LSA a beneficiary.

Retirement plan assets include IRA funds, 401(k)s, and 403(b)s. You can name LSA as a beneficiary on all or a portion of your retirement account. You can work with your fund manager to name LSA as a beneficiary, and your contact at LSA Advancement can help you decide where you would like your gift to go.

You can also name LSA as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, donor-advised fund, commercial annuity, or bank and brokerage account.

Give to LSA directly from your IRA account.

The second option is to give LSA a gift through the Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA. Once you reach age 72, you are required to take out a minimum annual distribution (cash) from your IRA fund. And at age 70.5, you can start making qualified charitable distributions where you can directly transfer a gift from your IRA fund to LSA. This is referred to as an IRA charitable rollover, or a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

Gifts of stock and other assets

Gifts of publicly traded securities that have appreciated in value allow you to avoid capital gains taxes while also receiving a tax deduction for your gift. LSA benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain, and you benefit from making a contribution that would be larger than what you might have been able to donate in cash.
