Last week, the Kresge Foundation, in partnership with the College for Creative Studies, announced the newest cohort of Kresge Artist Fellows. The prestigious artist fellowship is available to those living and working in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties and provides an unrestricted $25,000 award to develop their craft. The fellowship also includes an intensive professional development retreat.

Philp, Elster, and MacDonald were among the 18 winners chosen from a pool of more than 750 applicants.

Philp, a narrative journalist and narrative nonfiction author, recently released a book called A $500 House in Detroit: Rebuilding an Abandoned Home and an American City, published in 2017 (Scribner).

Macdonald is a community activist and artist in Detroit focusing on city history and neighborhood empowerment, and creates large-scale paintings for installation on abandoned buildings, including her Detroit Portrait Series.
