Washington University in St. Louis has announced that Andrew D. Martin, the current dean of the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, will serve as its next chancellor.

Dean Martin has served in his LSA role since 2014. He came to LSA after serving as a professor, department chair, and vice dean at Washington University. “The LSA deanship is the best job I ever had,” he said. “The opportunity to return to Washington University and St. Louis is a truly life-changing one for me and my family. But leaving LSA and U-M is a bittersweet moment.”

Among Dean Martin’s achievements at LSA:

  • With input from alumni and employers, Dean Martin developed the idea of the LSA Opportunity Hub, a new, unique program that works with LSA’s liberal arts students to integrate their academic explorations with their long-term goals and aspirations.

  • The dean led the college’s successful fundraising efforts during the latter half of the Victors for Michigan campaign; donors have given more than $500 million to LSA.

  • He has led a significant expansion of the college’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, including innovations such as the LSA Laptop Program, which provides computers to students with financial need; the Kessler Presidential Scholars, serving first-generation students; and the LSA Collegiate Fellows, which will recruit 50 outstanding young faculty members who have expertise in equity and inclusion.

“It is with mixed emotions that we congratulate Andrew Martin on being appointed as chancellor of Washington University,” said Martin A. Philbert, University of Michigan provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “I am certain that the university will benefit from his vision, clarity of purpose, insight, and his wisdom as he takes on this important role in academic leadership. Andrew’s standing as an academic in our community of scholars is matched only by his kind wit and sense of humor. I shall miss him greatly.”

Dean Martin will remain in the position until November 4, 2018. He will start at Washington University on January 1, 2019. The university will conduct a national search for Dean Martin’s replacement. An interim dean will be named to lead the college until that position is filled.
