Department/Unit: Department of Chemistry
Working Title: Student Services Assistant
Let's get to know Katie...
How long have you been with the university, and how long in your current position?
2 years as Dept. Admin Assistant and about 8 months as Student Services Assistant
What has been your most memorable experience at U-M?
My most memorable experience so far at UM was competing in the LSA Scavenger Hunt last spring/summer. Employees from the lab and the admin office were able to get to know one another better - making for a better working environment. We laughed so much at our Twitter account, and then the faculty started following our silly pictures. The initiative really got everyone involved as a team.
What gives you a connection to your job and helps you define your purpose?
As a department admin assistant, I worked a lot with faculty. I was able to learn more about them as researchers, but more as people. I like getting to know each person's "story." A big part of my purpose is helping others -streamlining reports, databases, events, etc. - but doing so with joy. Happiness and kindness is contagious.
What motivates and energizes you at work?
Enjoying a project motivates me at work. I was able to work on a project researching gift intent. Looking back at old documents and connecting the dots to current research funding really helped me learn some of the history of the chemistry department. Almost all projects can be enjoyable - you just have to find that piece that resonates with you and gives you a bigger picture of how you are making a difference.
What advice would you give to a new employee at the university?
There are so many good, kind people here a UofM. Get to know as many people in your department as possible!
If you had a spontaneous day off, what would you do?
Get a massage and read a book
What is your favorite place to grab lunch (near campus)?
Beanster’s in the League
