The Eastern Band of Cherokee in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina now has less than 250 native speakers of Cherokee, with the majority middle-aged and older. In an effort to revitalize Cherokee, the tribe has established an immersion school, a language academy, and other programs to enable children to learn Cherokee once again as a native language. *First Language *documents the extraordinary measures being taken to re-establish Cherokee as a native language.  The documentary is produced by the North Carolina Language and Life Project and the Eastern Band of Cherokee for broadcast on national public television.
