English as a Viking Language

Sally Thomason will lead a discussion this new (free online) book by Joseph Emonds and Jan Terje Faarlund: English as a Viking Language.  The goal is for several HistLing participants to look at enough of the book to summarize the main arguments and kinds of evidence.  Faarlund objected rather strenuously to a Language Log post that Sally wrote in response to his comments in a Science Daily article about the research, which claims that English is descended from Old Norse rather than from Old English. (If you read that post, please try to ignore the stupid mistake Sally made about German infinitive constructions!)  If you google "English or Engelsk", you'll also find links to an analysis by Asya Pereltsvaig of the Science Daily article.
