The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) would like to invite undergraduate students to participate in an entering research seminar for the Latina/o Undergraduate Research Network (LURN) starting February 16th, 2012, from 4:30-6:00pm!  This is a 1 unit weekly seminar that features research by faculty and graduate students and prepares undergraduates to identify potential research sponsors. Undergraduates have the option to participate for 1 unit, but the University of Michigan community is welcome to attend the research presentations and participate in discussions!  Presentations will be the first 30 to 45 minutes with a follow-up discussion, the rest of the seminar will focus on demystifying research and professional development.

The first meeting will feature Jennifer Peacock’s work on La Carpa – the Mobile Memory Museum: A Project of El Museo del Norte and will discuss the interdisciplinary nature of the Museum Without Walls. (February 16, 4:30-6pm, Undergraduate Science Building Room 1160).  This research project has received national recognition including the Huffington Post.  The project team is working in their second phase to design a mobile exhibit of photos, digitized documents, letters and ephemera, and audio that will travel to key Latina/o communities in Michigan. The exhibit will be accompanied by an interactive timeline into which visitors can insert their own histories of migration to and from Michigan. The project aims to raise awareness about the need for a museum in Southwest Detroit, to involve Latina/o communities as agents and creators of history, and to expand the visibility of the original museum project. For more information on El Museo del Norte please check out their website at:  http://www.elmuseodelnorte.org/. This is an excellent opportunity to gain insight from distinguished faculty and build relationships across disciplines.  Please RSVP if you are interested in attending: http://goo.gl/v8tGc
