When you come to see the special exhibition Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile, don't miss the chance to stop by the gift shop to peruse our graffiti-themed items.
The exhibition's companion catalog, Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile and Beyond, is a slender volume but is packed with information. Eight essays by international scholars explore the phenomenon of graffiti in ancient and Christian-era Sudan, as well as an overview of Nubian rock art and a look at graffiti at Pompeii. The volume concludes with an annotated catalog of graffiti from El-Kurru and a photo essay of the contemporary Nile Valley practice of “hajj images” that commemorate Muslim pilgrimage. Richly illustrated with over 200 full-color photos, this book is a wonderful way to further your knowledge about this little-known topic.
We also commissioned local artist Irina Bondarenko to create a series of mugs that feature some of the graffiti discovered at El-Kurru. Handmade of terracotta and terra sigillata, the mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe.
No visit to the Museum is complete without a stop in the gift shop. The Kelsey gift shop offers a tempting selection of collection-inspired items. Whether you are interested in our most recent Kelsey publication, a new piece of jewelry, or a gift or memento for a young museum visitor, make sure you include the gift shop as part of your Museum experience.
