Geoff Emberling will be giving two lectures about his current archaeological work at the site of Napata (modern Jebel Barkal), in northern Sudan. Geoff's project, sponsored by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, aims to reconceptualize the site's monumental pyramids, temples, and palaces within the context of an ancient city. Magnetometry and test excavation in 2019 and 2020 identified a previously unrecognized area of settlement (a "lost city") and begin to allow his team to evaluate the local environment and economy.

The two lectures are sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America. The first is titled "Rediscovering Napata—Capital City of Ancient Kush"; it takes place this Wednesday, April 21, at 8:00 p.m.

The second, "The Rise and Fall of Napata, an Ancient City along the Nile," will be held Friday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m.

Visit the links above for details about how to register for these free virtual lectures.

Recordings of both lectures will be freely available for a limited time through the AIA. If you would like to receive an email with links to the recordings after the talks, please email Geoff at geoffe@umich.edu.
