Family Week: Ancient Health & Wellness

Welcome to Virtual Family Week at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology!

All this week we will be exploring the theme of Self-Care: Health & Wellness in the Ancient World.

During the pandemic we have heard a lot about “self-care,” but what exactly does that mean? At the most basic level, it is how we take care of ourselves. The food we eat, the exercise we do to stay healthy, and the medicine we take when we get sick. However, self-care is more than that. It includes all the things we do to stay happy and healthy. That could be taking a walk or a run outside, or doing some arts and crafts. Maybe it’s playing a favorite sport with friends, or trying a new recipe.

During this virtual Family Week, we’ll learn about how people in the ancient Mediterranean practiced self-care. We’ll even try out some of their techniques for ourselves.

We kick this week off with an introductory tour about ancient self-care. Be sure to join us on Sunday, March 28, at 2 PM on Zoom. We will take a closer look at some objects in the Kelsey collection related to health and wellness. Join us on  Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96083862910.

[The video of this tour is now available to view on our YouTube page.]

Below are four tiles for you to explore.

  • Ancient Wellness is where you can find everything relating to food. On Friday we’ll wrap up the week with a cooking demonstration of an ancient Roman recipe.
  • Ancient Medicine is where we can explore ancient theories about the causes and cures of sickness. We’ll even try some ancient remedies!
  • Ancient Sports & Games is where you’ll find information about the #KelseyOlympics. Challenge your friends in ancient sporting events during this week-long competition.
  • Last but not least, our Coloring Pages are full of even more information about ancient wellness, medicine, and sports. They are great for all ages.

Finished an activity? Used a coloring page? Participated in the #KelseyOlympics? Share your works of art and videos with @kelseymuseum on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook using the hashtag #KelseyFamilyWeek.
