Safety is the primary concern, but skills and experience must be gained to work with minimal injury. The tools are extremely sharp and we create many sharp edges on the material as we machine a shape. If you have previous experience, please discuss this with the student shop instructor.
You may register for the class by filling out the form on the Student Shop Registration webpage.
It is a safety requirement that the Student Shop Class be completed successfully for ANYONE to use the machinery and equipment. The Student Shop Class is a combination of demonstration and exercise work that typically requires about twenty hours of your time. The focus of the Shop Class is an introduction to use of the milling machines and lathes, also providing some experience with supporting machines such as saws, drill presses and the belt sander.
The LSA Student Shop is a resource for Graduate and Undergraduate Students, Faculty and Staff to make, repair or retrofit scientific instruments and supporting equipment for the research labs. The Shop personnel are available to consult and assist in the basic mechanical design and a variety of fabrication techniques.
