About
Biography:
I received a Ph.D. in African history from the University of Minnesota in 2000, taught for several years at the College of New Jersey, then took up a lectureship in African history at the University of Cambridge, where I was director of the Centre of African Studies. In 2007 I was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize, given to lecturers at British universities for accomplishments in scholarship. In 2009 I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and joined the history department at Michigan that same year. My current book project concerns the history of ethnic patriotisms in colonial and postcolonial eastern Africa.
