Digital Humanities Summer Institute

The Institute for the Humanities will provide funding for up to four humanities graduate students to attend the DHSI at the University of Victoria, Canada. Participants may choose to attend one or two weeks of the Institute. Each week will include skills training workshops as well as a selection of colloquia, “unconferences,” panels, and institute lectures.

The list of this year's courses, as well as other information about the program, can be found at This year's course offerings include topics such as race, social justice and the digital humanities, archives for digital humanists, fundamentals of programming and coding, digital storytelling, digital games for scholarly research and pedagogy, open access and open scholarship, among others.

Grants will cover the registration fee for one week and provide $500 in reimbursement towards travel. These grants require matching support from the applicant’s home department. We anticipate awarding four grants for summer 2019. Grant awards will be based on the plan of study, including the statement of interest and rationale for participation.

Please note: DHSI is also offering a number of individual scholarships for the Summer Institute. These scholarships are open to all, and cover course costs with the exception of a small, non-refundable administration fee (students $150, non-students $300). For more information about this opportunity, please visit their website.

Students enrolled in doctoral programs in LSA humanities departments at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus, are invited to apply.

Criteria for funding include: relevance of the course offerings to the applicant’s dissertation or collaborative project, need for (further) training pursuant to research for that dissertation or related project, and the applicant’s status in their graduate program. Students who have not received an Institute for the Humanities DHSI grant will have priority over those who have.
