The Michigan 10 is a new podcast produced by and for students at the University of Michigan.
Co-produced by Isabel Berg and Lola Yang, The Michigan 10 explores knowledge that transcends the classroom by providing a humanities lens on local issues. Through interviews with scholars, each episode unravels a pressing issue in local culture and politics in an accessible and engaging manner. The name of the podcast draws from the limited time students have in between classes at U-M. Since each episode lasts just about 10 minutes, students will be able to tune in between classes, club meetings and commutes. The first episode features Associate Professor Allison Alexy, who discusses her research on the phenomenon of “ghosting” in America.
“I feel like there has always been a disconnect between what we study in the classroom and how we apply this knowledge in the real world,” says Isabel Berg. “We wanted to change that through The Michigan 10, to show that humanities is not limited to what we study in a philosophy or film class. It’s everywhere.”
The podcast creators are two of the seven members from the Institute for the Humanities’ Public Humanities Internship program. Interns are junior and senior students who develop public programs, plan events, and share information about humanities topics with the wider community. An important part of the program's mission is to help increase undergrad engagement with and appreciation for the humanities on campus. In addition to The Michigan 10, interns are also working together to produce a newsletter on humanities activities on campus, create programs for Humanities Afrofutures month, and organize a series of events called “Don’t Swipe” to promote exhibitions at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.
