Rules of Eligibility
The University of Michigan Club of New York has generously sponsored a scholarship award in honor of distinguished playwright and U-M graduate Arthur Miller. The contest is open to currently enrolled University of Michigan students, of sophomore or junior standing, who have demonstrated writing talent in the area of drama, screenplay, fiction, or poetry. Two letters of recommendation (or e-mails) by faculty members (professors or teaching assistants) are required. The recommendations need only be a couple sentences in length. They must be sent directly to firstname.lastname@example.org) or the Hopwood Room, 1176 Angell Hall.
Entries should be in 10-12 point font, with a left-hand margin of 1.5 inches, in PDF format. A contestant must use a pen name--entirely different from his or her real name. Please make sure that the pen name in your profile matches the one on your PDF. The same pen name must be used for all fall and winter term contests. This name should only appear on the title page, nowhere else in the manuscript.
The PDF must have a title page on which shall appear:
- The title
- The pen name
- The contest and area (e.g., the Arthur Miller Award--Fiction)
Nonfiction may not be entered in this contest.
There are no page limits for the manuscript but you should give the judge enough to go on (for example, 10-15 pages of poetry or 10-25 pages of fiction) .
The same manuscript may be submitted in the other fall and winter term contests administered by the Hopwood Program; manuscripts, that have already won prizes, may also be submitted in this contest.
A prize of $2,700 will be awarded once to an individual. If no writer is deemed worthy by the faculty judge, the award will be accrued and presented in a following year. A condition of the award is that it is to be used toward the student’s forthcoming tuition at the University of Michigan.
The deadline for the contest is absolutely no later than Wednesday, January 29, 2020, by 12 noon. Please be advised that the deadline is enforced to the minute.
Announcement of Awards
The winner of the Arthur Miller Award will be announced at the Hopwood Graduate and Undergraduate Awards Ceremony in April.
