About the Hopwood Awards

Since 1931, the Hopwood Awards Program has given almost 5000 awards to approximately 3300 writers, for a total of $5,936,635 in prize winnings (and growing). In 2019, we distributed 97 awards and prizes, totalling $269,875.

The Hopwood Awards Program has been credited with launching many student writers' careers in the arts, and in attracting already-talented writers to attend the University of Michigan. Frank O'Hara, for instance, attended because he had heard there was money for poets in Ann Arbor; with his $800 in 1951, he was able to pay his rent for the year.

If you are interested in joining the ranks of Hopwood Winners to pass through the University of Michigan, you can find out more above at "Contests & Prizes." If you're still considering the University of Michigan, come join us as an undergraduate or a graduate student. All full time umich students are eligible for at least some Hopwood-administered awards and prizes.
