Masha Gessen will be receiving the Wallenberg Medal and presenting the 2015 Wallenberg Lecture on Tuesday, November 3 at 7:30 pm in the Rackham Auditorium.
Gessen is a prolific writer about political and cultural affairs in Russia and the deteriorating human rights conditions under the current regime. She has repeatedly challenged the status quo in Russia, whether directing her criticism at state politics or LGBT oppression. Considered one of Russia’s leading LGBT rights activists, Gessen was one of the only openly gay people in Russia when she returned to Moscow in 1991. Since that time, she has been a vocal activist for minority groups and gay rights in Russia.
