“Fat Kills: Diabetes and the Obesity Epidemic in America”

More than 1/3 of US adults are obese, and more 17% of children and teens are similarly affected: these figures are much higher than they were a generation ago; obesity is now described as an epidemic, according to the CDC. Diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses have been associated with obesity and medical costs for obesity-related conditions have topped $150 billion. What’s the connection between obesity and diabetes? What’s the science behind this connection—how do we know it’s true? What will it take, personally and as a society, to overcome the obesity epidemic and prevent unnecessary deaths from diabetes? Come to hear a leading research scientist in the field address these and other urgent questions about obesity and diabetes.

Professor Alan Saltiel is the MarySue Coleman Director of the Life Sciences Institute and the John Jacob Abel Collegiate Professor in the Life Sciences.
