“In the great green room, there was a telephone…” Seventy years ago, writing Goodnight Moon, Margaret Wise Brown observed a media device in a bedroom, and we’re still trying to figure out what effect that phone in that place might be having on us. The phone is different now, of course, and is accompanied by lots of other devices and sources of media. What effects do these media have on us, our sleep, and our perceptions of reality? One UM professor is working hard to sort that out—and to keep up with the ever-changing media scene. Come join a lively discussion on the roles media play in our perceptions and daily lives.

Jan van den Bulck is Professor of Communications; his work focuses on media of various kinds and the effect of media on our perceptions, cultural understandings, and health. He has been featured in TED talks and his work has been discussed in the popular press. Originally from Belgium, Professor van den Bulck has a Ph.D. from the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven, and a D.Sc. in Epidemiology from Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He came to UM just last summer.
