Dissertation: "Illicit Intimacies: Gender, US Empire, and Nationalism in the Postwar Philippines"
My dissertation investigates the management of intimacies between U.S. servicemen and Filipino women from 1945-1965. Defining "intimacies” broadly, I look at alliances between the U.S. military and Philippine government in combating venereal disease and regulating sexual labor, as well as the role of U.S. Army officials in processing the marriage applications of U.S. soldiers and Filipinas. In addition to tracing these institutional processes and interventions, my work explores the representation of Filipina-G.I. intimacies in post-WWII Philippine cultural productions such as films, novels, and short stories, and considers the legacies of these histories in Philippine life and Filipino American communities through oral history.
