Nicholas Hartigan writes, "While a fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, I'll be conducting research in two areas. The museum holds the archives of the Save Outdoor Sculpture program, which is an ongoing attempt to record all outdoor sculpture in the United States. They also hold a collection of maquettes (preparatory models) of public sculptures commissioned by the General Services Administration's Art in Architecture program. Both of these collections are wonderful resources for the study I'm conducting on the growth of public sculpture in the United States, and with the support of the Smithsonian I'll be able to devote myself to full-time research and writing. I'm eager to start."
