A Note From The New Director

Greetings from snowy Ann Arbor!

With three months under my belt here at the Global Scholars Program and the U of M, I’m feeling very much at home. That’s thanks to the warm welcome and much help from Ashley, Nita, Eli, Chinmay, Kate, Yuezhong, and all of the GSP students and student-leaders. What a great community I’ve found myself a part of!

When people learn that I came here after living and working in Japan for many years, they ask me how I found out about GSP and why I chose to apply for the Director’s position.

My best friend from college has worked at the U of M for many years, and when he saw that GSP was looking for a new Director, he let me know, thinking that it would be a good fit with my experiences and values. I’m so glad that he did, because what really attracted me to this position was the chance to work directly with students in a diverse and inclusive community committed to social justice.

My own background in this area stems from academic work on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s nonviolent fight for social rights here in the U.S. and citizen peace movements in Japan and Costa Rica as well as my own participation in activism in social justice, anti-war, and anti-nuclear weapons campaigns.

That’s a little bit about me, but I’d also like to know about you. If you have time to tell me about what GSP means to you, please email me ([email protected]) or stop by GSP the next time you’re on campus.

GSP Leader Interview, Winter 2018

What was your inspiration to become a GSP Leader?

Being able to live in NQ with the community immersion. I really enjoyed dialogues and wanted to work with newer members in that space.

What was your favorite GSP moment?
The rising PF retreat! The retreat was so fun and so powerful, especially when we gave testimonials. The PF retreat gave me the unique opportunity to create a deeper bond and understanding with friends I already knew very well.

What was a surprising learning moment for you?
The timeline debrief exercises we did were surprising to me. They helped dissect the various aspects of the cycle of socialization in my own life. In particular, realizing how feelings about my mixed race status were impacted by others from a young age in so many ways I had not realized before.
