2018 GSP Symposium and Gala, Highlights
Thanks to GSP Alumni Indu Ghandikota for setting the groundwork for a redesigned symposium weekend. For the first time in GSP history, Advisory Council hosted a formal gala that included dinner, awards, and celebration. All the first year students were able to share their yearlong projects with each other and the community, and we were able to see result-driven presentations on the high impact work they performed. We were thrilled to GSP Alumni Paola Mendez as our keynote speaker during the symposium. We can't thank our students and alumni enough for another year of learning and meaningful community.
Alternative Spring Break Reflections, 2018
"As an international student in the US, I had only been exposed to the rich, fast-paced cultures at Ann Arbor, Chicago, New York and D.C. Going to Atlanta was an enriching and eye-opening experience that I had never been exposed to. Starting from the southern hospitality to the slow, laid-back lifestyle at Atlanta, one of the most critical aspects that stood out to me was the wealth and income disparities within a distance of only 10-15 miles or even less. Observing and gaining more knowledge about the income disparities was influential and educational and it tied well into the ASB experience. The Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition focuses primarily on safe drug use, safe sex practices, and safe injection of medications to those who cannot afford needles, condoms, and basic health education. Recognizing the privileges that most students here at UM have, I felt empathetic and grateful for contributing towards the local community in helping them safely practice sex and drug use. Overall, I was happy to have spent my time, efforts, and hard work towards making a significant impact in their lives." - Apoorvee Singhal
