Kristin Dickinson (Assistant Professor, German Studies) has organized a photography exhibit titled "Visualizing Translation: Homeland and Heimat in Detroit and Dortmund." The exhibit brings together photographs by Theon Delgado Sr. and Peyman Azhari of Southwest Detroit and Northern Dortmund, Germany. It will be on display in the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library from October 4 - November 29.
Shedding light on each neighborhood’s histories of migration, the exhibit prompts us to consider the many meanings of home/land and Heimat from both a visual and a multilingual perspective. In addition to a series of streetscapes, the exhibit features sixteen portraits accompanied by brief narratives of home and migration, which visitors may listen to via QR code in English, German or Spanish.
If you are interested in bringing a class to the exhibit and would like to reserve a classroom at the library, please contact Kristin at [email protected].
Please also visit https://translatingmichigan.org/ for background information on the photographers, sample images from the exhibit and more.
There will also be a virtual panel discussion with the photographers on Saturday, October 9 at 2pm. Kristin will send out the zoom link for this discussion as the date comes closer.
